Protocol FAQ

Protocol FAQ

BackedBy is a protocol, which means that its run by a non-profit foundation and functions as infrastructure for creator-owned platforms, leveraging blockchain technology to store and secure content. Creators can use the BackedBy protocol to create a platform to upload and share their content. Click here for a more detailed comparison.

You put USDC in your wallet (a secure and reliable stable coin that maps 1:1 with the US Dollar), you subscribe to a creator, and the necessary amount of USDC is automatically withdrawn from your wallet every month until you cancel your subscription. It’s that easy!

Your platform can host pretty much any content that can be hosted on a website, including:

  • Video: films, series, vlogs, let’s plays
  • Audio: music, podcasts, sissy hypno
  • Images: photos, comics, commissions (even NSFW)
  • Text: fiction, nonfiction, journalism, blogs, shitposts

You own your data. All of the data related to your profile and your BackedBy creator platform is stored in decentralized smart contracts and on the Inter Planetary File System. If the backed.by website goes down, your content and subscriptions will still exist in those places.

We do not store any password information because there are no passwords in Web3; your wallet verifies your account ownership using asymmetric private/public key encryption. Likewise, paying subscribers gain privileged access to your posts with their verified wallets.

You can give us your email if you want, but you don’t have to!

No. The experience for both you and your subscribers will be very similar to other apps you’ve used online–simple and easy to use. If you need some help getting started, check out our guides to learn more.

Creators build platforms. Not tech companies. We want to reward early creators on BackedBy for their trust and promotional efforts by giving them a share of ownership in the platform. Click here for more information.

What is BackedBy?

BackedBy is a protocol where you build a platform for you to post content and your subscribers to pay a monthly membership fee to access your content. The difference is that you have complete ownership over your platform. We’re serious: you own the platform on the blockchain the same way you own cryptocurrency that’s in your wallet. Payment processing and content hosting is powered by the immutability and security of web3.

Can my platform be suspended?

Not by us, or by anyone other than you. We don’t own your platform, we don’t process your payments, we don’t host your content. As a creator, you assume full responsibility of your platform as it exists on the blockchain. You’re the boss of your business, you decide what happens.

Does this mean I can use BackedBy to build a platform with illegal content?

As with any other business, illegal acts are subject to consequences from legal authorities. Unlike other businesses, web3 technology keeps a permanent record of all of your activities accessible by anyone, so you will be held accountable for your actions.

Where are my posts stored?

IPFS, the decentralized and open file storage protocol for web3. It supports posting embedded text, images, audio, and video with the option to provide file attachments to download. Since this content is stored on chain it can never be deleted, altered, hidden, and is accessible 24/7.

Can’t everyone in the world see my posts if they’re on IPFS?

Your content is encrypted and accessible only for your paying subscribers using Lit Protocol. Any free content you post is visible to everyone, just like any other website.

Who owns my data?

All of the data related to your platform is stored in a decentralized smart contract and on IPFS. You have the option of securely providing us your email address if you want to be notified when you get a new subscriber. Subscribers have the option of providing an email address for us to notify them when you create a new a post. We do not store any password information because there are no passwords; your wallet verifies your account ownership using asymmetric private/public key encryption. Likewise, paying subscribers gain privileged access to your posts with their verified wallets.

Do I need to understand how all of this works to own a platform?

No. The experience for both you and your subscribers will be very similar to other apps you’ve used online— simple and easy to use. If you need some help getting started, check out our guides to learn more.
